Tom previously worked for three other newspapers: the Tulsa World in Oklahoma, the Aurora Beacon-News in Illinois and the Fresno Bee in California. In Tulsa, a year out of college, Tom created a social services beat that won statewide reporting awards. Tom gained management experience as an assistant city editor in Aurora. Tom’s summer internships during college were at the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C., The Times in Hammond, Ind., and at the Indianapolis News on a Pulliam Fellowship. Tom was the editor-in-chief of his college newspaper, the Badger Herald, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
